Apple Pie

I know there will be numerous posts on this subject but bear with me! My partner is desperate for me to make an apple pie like his nanna used to make, but am unable to get her recipe or her tips/tricks/methods. He wants it to be mostly apple sauce type filling, which is fine, I have a tin of pie apples and a jar of apple sauce. The real request is apparently she did something between the crust and the layer of apple sauce that made the base/filling seem almost creamy (for lack of a better description)

Any ideas how I can achieve this? Putting cream on the bottom I'm guessing it not going to work. I'm at my wits end trying to recreate nanna's apple pie so here I am! Any ideas would be much appreciated :)
