My Little Pony cake!

I'm a qualified baker and training pastry chef who likes to bake cakes in my spare time. Recently I've had a few requests for birthday cakes and one of them was a My Little Pony cake for the young daughter of a friend of mine. Her only specifications were "rainbow cake and her favourite colour is pink" so with that in mind I made the cake I've been wanting to make for some time now: Pinkie Pie's gala dress! The birthday party in question isn't till this Saturday but I am having an operation tomorrow (just having a tooth out, nothing serious) and I wasn't sure if I'd be fully recovered from the general anesthetic by Thursday/Friday. Anyway!

Inside the top cake after I levelled it off. Looks a bit like a CT scan! I'm amused that she wanted a brightly coloured rainbow cake for a party filled with 2-3 year olds - they are going to be bouncing off the walls!

I cut three layers into both cakes, filled them with rasplum jam and raspberry and wizz fizz (sherbert) buttercream, then coated both with more buttercream.

Sampling the buttercream and jam combo from some offcuts!

The finished cake! I used Bakels RTR fondant and I found it SO MUCH EASIER to use than ones I've made myself. The Pinkie figurine is one of the blind bag ones with florist's wire stuck into two of her legs to keep her upright.

A closer look at the top!

Just some of the many, many dishes I now have to wash up.

Cross-posted around the various baking/cake comms and the pony comm!

My son says, "vinyl scratch is best pony, but that cake is pretty sweet." He went as Pinky Pie last halloween, in a pink dress mind you. He decided, at 16, there was no point to dressing up this year.

Your son sounds awesome! I cosplay Rainbow Dash at conventions with my girlfriend as Fluttershy - last time my best friend came along as Derpy too!

Cute! My kid's fav seems to be Pinkie rn, which is funny cause my husband was like, "she has to like the loud one." LOL

Pinkie and Dash are my two favorites :) because put their personalities together and you get me! I also love that Pinkie lives above a cake shop!

Fluttershy is my spirit animal. LOL It's not a positive thing, but I seriously facepalm at all the things I've seen her do that I've done in my life. LOL

How did you get it rainbow/tie-dye like that?

Separate the batter into bowls, colour each one, pour into tin and fold ONCE with a spatula :)

Do you try and keep the colors in separate sections when you pour or just dump on top of each other? They don't just blend into one yucky color?

The cake looks so awesome, by the way!

If you pour them in carefully and use a spatula to spread to the edges, they don't blend too much. The cake rising also adds to the psychedelic effect as the batter moves.

Thankyou! I'm so happy with it too - it's only the 4th time I've worked with fondant and the first time I've used RTR fondant instead of making my own. In the past I've had a ton of issues with it but this time it seemed almost too easy :O
